SALT LAKE GANG HISTORY (2024)

1987

May--Salt Lake police find the letters "PVC" painted in a junior high school. PVC stands for "Park Village Crips," a gang originating in Compton, Calif. It's the first sign of Crips graffiti in Utah.

June--Los Angeles police contact Ogden police to report Crips are moving into Utah to start dealing in crack.

September-November--Eight suspected Crips members are charged with dealing cocaine in Salt Lake County.

Dec.2--Salt Lake experiences what is believed to be its first gan-related fatal shooting when a local Hispanic drug dealer is gunned down in the intersection of 15th West and American Avenue (930 South) by assailants police believe to be either Bloods or Crips.

1988

Spring--Salt Lake narcotics officers raid a barricaded crack house. They seize a poind of cocaine and several weapons and arrest a member of an out-of-state Bloods gang.

April 13--A state narcotics agent purchases crack from the Ogden residence of an admitted Crips member who police say was getting his cocaine supply from Crips in California.

April 17--Gunmen in a car fire four rounds at a home near 11th West and Fourth South in what the victims believe was a gang-related incident.

July 12--Federal narcotics agents arrest two University of Utah football players. The players, who prosecutors say were involved in Crips gang activity, were getting their cocaine from a Crips gangster in Compton, Calif.

August--A former Weber state basketball player police say associated with Southern California gangs is charged in Ogden with distributing crack.

Sept. 14--Salt Lake police arrest a 10-year-old Tongan boy after he scribbles "Tongan Crips Gangster" graffiti on his elementary school walls.

Sept. 23--Narcotics officers raid a West Valley residence, seize one pound of cocaine and arrest a teenage member of a Los Angeles Crips gang.

Oct. 1--The words "Crips" and "TCG" (Tongan Crips Gangsters) are written on a car window in the area of 800 S. Park St.

1989

Jan. 18--Eight people claiming to be Bloods from Los Angeles enter a convenience store at 109 S.Third East, intimidate the cashier and steal merchandise.

February--Ogden police serve three search warrants at suspected crack houses. At one house, they seize a phone book with words on it believed to be associated with a Crips gang in Compton, Calif. Also seized is a photo album titled "Homeboys" that has photos of males wearing Crips colors and demonstrating Crips hand signals.

March 2--A Crips member from California is arrested in Ogden for possession of crack. The suspect, who is gunned down a month later in California, maintained a safe in his Ogden residence for a Crips gang that was bringing about 10 pounds a month into Utah. police said.

March 18--A black Los Angeles youth is killed in an argument at a West Valley disco. Suspect is a Tongan youth who witnesses said was wearing colors and using gang terms, such as "Cuz."

March 25--Shots are fired and three men are stabbed during a fight between rival gangs at 562 N. Eighth West.

March 28--A group of Hispanic youths yelling gang slogans chase two Tongans walking on Emery Street (1170 West) near 10th South. A half-dozen shots are fired, one of which strikes one of the Tongans in the chest.

March 31--A Hispanic boy, 15, is accosted at East High School by Tongans who ask if he belongs to a certain gang. The victim denies gang affiliation and is threatened. Police tell victim the threat may be related to the March 28 shooting.

April 2--A Hispanic teenager is beaten severly by another Hispanic youth, who is backed up by four others. Prior to the assault, the assailant tells the victim, "I heard you were talking about my homeboys."

April 8-9--A Salt Lake man, 21, is fired upon three times in a drive-by shooting. Victim believes suspects were the same youths who tried unsuccessfully to get him to join a Crips gang in March.

April 9--A black Provo man is shot and killed by another black man in a fight outside a downtown Salt Lake restaurant. He dies five days later. Police are looking into a possible Crips/Bloods connection.

April 16--Shots are fired near 600 N. Redwood Road in a gang-related dispute apparantly arising out of a gang member's desire to leave the group.

April 17--An admitted member of the "Tongan Crips Gangsters" is booked into jail in connection with the apparently gang-related burning last February of a car belonging to the suspect in the April 9 shooting.
