Reds' Hunter Greene: Handed loss in St. Louis

Grene (5-4) allowed a run on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings Sunday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Cardinals.

Greene kept St. Louis off the board until Alec Burleson knocked an RBI single in the fifth inning. While that was the only run charged against Greene, Cincinnati was shut out, leaving him with the tough-luck loss. While he needed 95 pitches to get through 4.2 frames, he managed to force 16 swinging strikes. Greene has failed to complete five innings in two straight outings and has just one quality start over his last six appearances. He'll carry a 3.70 ERA into his next start, which is lined up to be at home against Detroit.

Cardinals' Lance Lynn: Cruises to victory

Lynn (4-3) allowed two hits and a walk over six shutout frames Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over the Reds.

Lynn faced little pushback as he sliced through the Reds' lineup. He generated a season-high 17 whiffs, including 14 with his four-seam fastball. It was his second straight win after going 0-1 in his previous five starts. Lynn dropped his season ERA to 3.59 alongside an 84:31 K:BB through 17 starts this season. His next outing is projected to be in Washington.

Mets' Luis Severino: Allows four runs in seven frames

Severino did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings against the Astros. He struck out three.

Severino was highly efficient if not incredibly effective, needing just 79 pitches to complete seven innings despite allowing four runs, nine baserunners and throwing a first-pitch strike to just 13 of 28 batters. He also struck out only three after fanning a season-high 10 batters in his previous outing. It's the fifth-consecutive start he's gone at least six innings, though it's the second time within those starts that he allowed at least four earned runs. Severino's next opportunity to toe the rubber is slated to take place next weekend when the Mets travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates.

Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Allows two homers

Corbin (1-8) suffered the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk over six innings against the Rays. He struck out five.

Corbin got bitten by the home run bug in the second, giving up two blasts that allowed three runs to cross the plate. Otherwise, a fourth inning sac fly was the only other damage to his line. It was the first time in four games Corbin had allowed a long ball and he's had 10 games this season in which he's not allowed a ball to leave the yard. However, over the other seven instances, including Sunday, he's allowed multiple homers on five occasions. Corbin currently carries a season ERA of 5.49 but even including this start, his ERA has been a solid 3.47 over his last four starts spanning 23.1 innings. Corbin's next outing is slated to take place at home next weekend when the Cardinals visit the nation's capital to take on the Nationals.

Pirates' Jared Jones: Re-entering rotation Wednesday

Jones is listed as the Pirates' starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals at PNC Park.

Jones will slot back into the rotation for the first time since June 22 after the Pirates opted to skip his turn this past week. The decision to bypass Jones' turn wasn't based on any injury; instead, the Pirates are cognizant of keeping the 23-year-old right-hander's workload in check during his first season in the majors. The Pirates haven't offered up a firm innings limit for Jones in 2024 nor outlined their plans on when/if he might be skipped again, but fantasy managers shouldn't hesitate to keep him active when he's confirmed to start. Though he's had more trouble keeping walks in check in his recent starts compared to earlier in the campaign, Jones will still head into his 16th start of the season Wednesday with stellar ratios (3.66 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 19.4 K-BB%).

Guardians' Gavin Williams: Making first start Wednesday

Williams (elbow), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list earlier Sunday, is scheduled to make his first start of the season for the Guardians on Wednesday versus the White Sox at Progressive Field.

Williams' 30-day rehab window came to a close Sunday, so the Guardians brought him back from the IL a few days before he's set to make his 2024 MLB debut. The right-hander submitted a 7.88 ERA and 2.00 WHIP across eight innings over his first four rehab starts with Triple-A Columbus, but he looked strong his last two times out, turning in five- and four-inning starts while allowing two total runs and submitting a 10:2 K:BB between those outings. The Guardians will likely keep the 24-year-old's workload in check to some extent Wednesday, but based on how he concluded his rehab assignment, Williams might be worthy of activating this week while he faces off against a weak White Sox lineup.
